Learn the skills to lead and assist girls in planning, preparing, and experiencing outdoor camping. Adult troop volunteers are required to complete Outdoor Skills Training before taking Girl Scouts on overnight camping experiences at any Girl Scout camps, public, private, state, or national parks.

This training prepares leaders for experiences specific to outdoor camping adventures, including fire-building, tent camping, meal planning, outdoor cooking, packing essentials, and safety. During this training, participants will learn to identify readiness factors in girls to go on overnight campouts. Topics covered will include camp planning with the girls, Kaper charts, progressions, basic skill instruction, group dynamics and management.

Participants will learn to demonstrate outdoor skills to girls, including outdoor cooking techniques, fire building and safety, dish washing procedures, Leave No Trace, knot tying, camp safety, and site orientation. Participants will review GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints, council property policies, learn the process to make reservations for council properties and proper closing and cleaning procedures.

This 28-hour course requires an overnight stay at our council camp property. Participants must attend the entire training course and pass a skills assessment to complete the training.  Upon successful completion of the course training, each participant will receive a certificate of completion valid for three years that qualifies the participant to lead girls in overnight outdoor camping activities.

This course requires a minimum of 6 participants. The cost is $60 per person and includes all food required for cooking. Participants must provide their own sleeping bag, pillow, clothing and toiletries.
