This is an American Red Cross Lifeguard Blended Learning Course.

 

All participants must complete the required swimming skills prerequisite prior to taking the course. The pre-requisite skills assessments will include:

Complete a Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence:

  • Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Complete a Timed Event within 1 minute 40 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

 

This class is taught in a blended learning format followed by 3 separate full day in-person sessions (Must attend all class dates). The online portion (accessed via mobile desktop or tablet) must be completed on your own by 07/03/2025 in order to attend the instructor-led skills session. You will receive an email confirmation from council with course details once registration has closed. This email will include information about the prerequisite skills assessment. Additionally, a separate email from the Red Cross will be sent to you on or around 06/16/2025 with a link to access the online portion of the course. The online portion is approximately 6 hours in length. The in-person, instructor-led sessions will take place over three 8-hour days.

 

Throughout the course, participants will learn and be evaluated on the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies in both shallow water (less than 7 feet) and deep water (7 feet or more). They will also be trained to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. To successfully complete the course, participants must pass the final skills assessments.

Upon successful completion of all components of the course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding with CPR/AED and First Aid valid for two years.

 

This course requires a minimum of 5 participants. Cost is $225 per person.
