Girls will explore the different species of sea turtles, their habitats, diets, and migration patterns, nesting behavior and hatchling development.
We will take a guided beach walk to visit marked sea turtle nests, view a faux nest, discuss nesting season data and conservation efforts. All while identifying turtle crawls, helping to clean up trash and learning about beach ambassadors.
We will connect with the local Turtle Watch Program to learn about nest monitoring and observe a nest excavation (if timing allows), view a sea turtle egg and discuss predation risks.
A park ranger or turtle patrol volunteer will share marine life careers, their role in marine conservation and career paths and responsibilities in marine life fields. We will learn about Florida laws protecting sea turtles, the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems and get resources from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Participants will visit a local museum to see sea turtles and explore interactive exhibits like a touch room and nest display.
To wrap up, participants will create a conservation-themed poster that will be displayed in a kiosk to raise public awareness.
Girls will receive GSGCF councils Turtle Watch Patch.
