Discover the treasures of Gasparilla Island State Park! We'll start with a guided beachcombing session to collect and identify shells along the shore. Girls will learn about the Calusa Native Americans, the "Shell Indians" who used these coastal finds for everything from tools to architecture, before creating their own beautiful shell art to take home.
Following the program, girls are invited to explore the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum. This "please touch" museum offers a hands-on look at local bones, fossils, and shells, while sharing stories of the 1900s phosphate industry and world-famous tarpon fishing. It is the perfect way to see how the island has changed from the era of the Calusa to today.
Please plan to bring a packed lunch to enjoy with the group after the program. We recommend wearing water shoes or sturdy sandals as well as a hat for the shelling portion to stay comfortable while exploring the shore. Girls are also encouraged to bring their swimsuits, towels, and beach gear to enjoy the water for the rest of the afternoon.
There is a $3 per vehicle fee to access Gasparilla Island State Park. The park is open from 8 a.m. until sundown.
