Small Craft Safety Training: Canoe and Kayak - Blended Learning at Camp Caloosa (North Fort Myers)

This course teaches adults basic water rescue and skills needed for a successful canoe or kayak adventure. Participants will learn canoe and kayak flatwater basics, including:

  • Launching and carrying
  • Entering the water safely
  • Paddling and maneuvering

Participants must be prepared to get into the water, pass a basic swimming test, and capsize their vessel as part of the skills assessment.

Upon successful completion of both the online and in-person components, participants will receive a certificate of completion valid for two years, qualifying them to lead girls in flatwater canoe and kayak activities.

 

Blended Learning Format

This is a blended learning course consisting of two components:

1. Online Coursework (accessed via gsLearn)

  • Must be completed by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the Friday before the in-person training.
  • Participants will receive an email with course information after registration closes.
  • A signed Small Craft Safety Training: Canoe and Kayak Recipient Use Agreement is required before receiving access to the online learning materials.

2. In-Person Skills Session

  • Required to complete certification.
  • Requires moderate physical activity.
  • Includes in-water skills practice, rescue techniques, and assessment.

 

 

Registration Information

  • Registration closes: 12/30/25
  • Participants must be registered Girl Scout adults with a current background check.
  • Minimum participants: 4

 

Cost

  • Course fee: $15 per person

 

Registration closes 12/30/2025. Refunds and cancellations cannot be processed after 12/30/2025.
