This course teaches adults basic water rescue and skills needed for a successful canoe or kayak adventure. Participants will learn canoe and kayak flatwater basics, including:
- Launching and carrying
- Entering the water safely
- Paddling and maneuvering
Participants must be prepared to get into the water, pass a basic swimming test, and capsize their vessel as part of the skills assessment.
Upon successful completion of both the online and in-person components, participants will receive a certificate of completion valid for two years, qualifying them to lead girls in flatwater canoe and kayak activities.
Blended Learning Format
This is a blended learning course consisting of two components:
1. Online Coursework (accessed via gsLearn)
- Must be completed by 5:00 p.m. on the Thursday before the in-person training.
- Participants will receive an email with course information after registration closes.
- A signed Small Craft Safety Training: Canoe and Kayak Recipient Use Agreement form is required before receiving access to the online learning materials.
2. In-Person Skills Session
- Required to complete certification.
- Requires moderate physical activity.
- Includes in-water skills practice, rescue techniques, and assessment.
- A signed Adult Consent Form for Small Craft Safety Training - Caloosa is required before attending the in-person skills session.

Cost
- Course fee: $15 per person
