We are excited to continue our partnership with Oyster River Ecology and focus on oyster restoration efforts. During this service project Girl Scout Seniors, Ambassadors, and Adults will construct Oyster Rag Pots (ORPs), a cost-effective and innovative method developed to restore oyster habitats in the Manatee River and beyond.
Oyster Rag Pots are handmade structures crafted from concrete-soaked rags draped over wooden frames. Once cured, these pots are deployed in targeted areas to provide a suitable substrate for oyster larvae to attach and grow, effectively rebuilding oyster reefs that filter water, support marine biodiversity, and stabilize shorelines.
This event will include hands-on ORP construction and an educational segment to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the ecological importance of oysters and the impact of restoration work. This knowledge empowers volunteers to appreciate the significance of their contributions to improving local water quality and habitat values.
The ORPs constructed during these events will be installed in designated restoration sites, such as the Eileen Reef in the Manatee River, within two weeks of creation. This timely deployment ensures that volunteers' efforts have a direct and positive impact on the local marine environment.
By participating, girls will play a vital role in restoring oyster populations and enhancing the health of our coastal waters.
Only registered Girl Scout Adult Members with an approved background check may attend. Adults must register to attend this program.
We must meet a minimum of 20 participants to offer this event.
