Our adventure is split into two immersive experiences designed to get everyone moving and learning. First, during the Marine Life Field Study, we will head to the shoreline after a safety briefing to explore the shallow grass flats. Using dip nets, students will catch and observe local marine animals in their natural habitat and use a dichotomous key to identify and classify our finds-learning how to tell different species apart like real field scientists-before releasing them back into the wild.
Next, we head back to the trail for Watershed Games & a Nature Walk to investigate the mangrove forest and see how these "walking trees" protect our coastline. We will participate in the Water Wonders game to see how the water cycle connects our backyard to the ocean and play the Life of the Osprey game to understand the daily survival of our local birds of prey. This walk includes a look at how watersheds function and why keeping our land clean is the first step toward a healthy sea.
This program is open to all participants who are at least 8 years old at the time of the event. While we will be wading into shallow water to collect samples with our nets, please note that this is not a swimming activity; those who prefer to stay dry are more than welcome to participate and observe from the safety of the shoreline. Our ultimate goal is for the girls to walk away with a deeper appreciation of the natural world and a clearer understanding of how we interact with and depend on our local environment.
