This course prepares adults with the skills to lead girls on outdoor camping adventures, including fire-building, tent camping, meal planning, outdoor cooking, packing essentials, and overall camp safety.

Participants will learn the essentials of planning and preparing girls for overnight activities, including:

  • How to assess girls' readiness for overnight campouts
  • Planning campouts with the girls
  • Using Kaper charts
  • Understanding camp progression
  • Teaching basic outdoor skills
  • Managing group dynamics

Participants will also learn and practice demonstrating key outdoor skills to girls, including:

  • Outdoor cooking techniques
  • Fire building
  • Fire safety
  • Dishwashing procedures
  • Leave No Trace principles
  • Knot tying
  • Camp safety
  • Site orientation

Upon successful completion of both the online and in-person components, participants will receive a certificate of completion valid for three years. This certificate qualifies the participant to lead girls in overnight outdoor camping activities.

Blended Learning Format

This is a blended learning course consisting of two components:

1. Online Coursework (accessed via gsLearn)

  • Must be completed by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the Friday before the in-person training.
  • Must pass the online end-of-course assessment to attend the in-person session.
  • Participants will receive an email with course information after registration closes.

2. In-Person Skills Session

  • Required to complete certification.
  • Requires some moderate physical activity (standing, kneeling, walking, bending, sitting)
  • Must attend the full in-person overnight stay session and pass the skills assessment.

Registration Information

  • Registration closes: 03/31/2026
  • Participants must be registered Girl Scout adults with a current background check.
  • Minimum participants: 6

 

Cost & Subsidy Information

  • Course fee: $15 per person and includes all food and equipment required for cooking.
  • Participants must provide their own sleeping bag, pillow, clothing, and toiletries.
  • The full cost of this course is $55 and is being subsidized this year at this reduced rate thanks to a generous donation. No shows or cancellations after the close of registration will be charged the full cost of the course to their troop through an ACH to the troop bank account.

 

Registration closes 03/31/2026. Refunds and cancellations cannot be processed after 03/31/2026.
